This phase of expansion was recorded by the chronicler Radu Popescu. Accordingly to him to punish the people from Targoviste “who had done something wrong to a brother of Vlad Voda”, the lord “sent his servants on Easter day and they caught the men and women and boys and girls, dressed up for holiday, and brought them to Poienari Fortress where they worked till their clothes torn apart”.

A big part of the fortress was preserved. The northern part is the one that did not resist to time. It collapsed in Arges River. The access point is next to Arges River bed. The traveller must climb 1480 steps up the Cetatuia Mountain. The trail passes through the thick forest coming to light only towards the end of the route. It is worth to get to Poienari Fortress to see the places that are really connected to Vlad the Impaler and to enjoy a special view (from up there you can see toward south a good part from Arges Valley and toward north the narrow path of Arges River).

How do you get there?

You can get there easily from Curtea de Arges driving for about 25 km on the road named Transfagarasan, DN7C.

Vidraru – Arges Valley

This place is impressive, first you discover a narrow gorge and after a 10 minutes of driving you arrive on a huge dam, Vidrau Dam.

This place, Vidraru dam frightened me ever since childhood. It was indeed big, too big for a child. There were 166 meters for staring vacantly into space. That frightened me most. This is the height of the dam and it is visible downstream to the south.

<g clip-path="url(#a)"><mask id="b" style="mask-type:luminance" maskUnits="userSpaceOnUse" x="0" y="0" width="600" height="28"></mask><g filter="url(#c)" mask="url(#b)"></g></g><defs><clipPath id="a"></clipPath><filter id="c" x="5.438" y="-29.667" width="589.123" height="52.8" filterUnits="userSpaceOnUse" color-interpolation-filters="sRGB"><feFlood flood-opacity="0" result="BackgroundImageFix"/><feBlend in="SourceGraphic" in2="BackgroundImageFix" result="shape"/><feGaussianBlur stdDeviation="5.5" result="effect1_foregroundBlur_3983_183"/></filter></defs>

Vidraru dam was built in 1966 creating the lake with the same name. It has a strategic importance in the area. It is the source that produces electricity for the entire area.

The place is impressive. Besides the imposing building (Vidraru dam) there is the panorama of Fagaras mountain range. Towards north you can see ones of the highest peaks in Romania (Negoiu, Lespezi and Caltun). Vidraru anthropogenic lake offers inspirational views. It changes its colours or the reflection of the forest and the clouds depending of the season.

Vidraru dam is a beautiful place. It offers an ample perspective over the Carpathians. It is easily reachable. If you get to Poienari Fortress or only to Curtea de Arges take two hours to go to Vidraru Dam. You will enjoy it.

From Bucharest you can get here in about two and a half hours. Part of the road is on A1 highway. The view is amazing as you enter the national road from Bascov (Pitesti).
