Where, when, who?

We have celebrated Ia’s Day and Sanziene a little bit earlier. Because we relied on people coming from Bucharest, we organized the event in the first weekend before 24th of June.

Curtea de Arges

We gathered 22 people from Bucharest. Among us three tots who didn’t wear for the first time the traditional costume. We began the story with a visit in Curtea de Arges, the first capital city of Wallachia. We visited the Royal Court, the Royal Church and Curtea de Arges Monastery.

Corbi, flowers, traditional meal

We continued our way to Corbi. A fierce rain accompanied us from Domnesti to the guesthouse. We have reached our destination with good weather. The summer rain quickly stopped and over the lake in front of the guesthouse rose the sun. We had a traditional rich lunch. The cheese, the ham, the eggplants, the beans paste, the spawn and the vegetables were served for starter. Then we ate tripe soup and pies cooked by recipes from Arges.

Enjoying the good weather we went to the meadows in the area to pick flowers. Tradition says that the flowers picked before Sanziene have magical powers. But they can be used for teas or cures only if they are picked before the 25th of June.

Ia, Corbi Monastery, Mother Uta’s house

Without exception we dressed the traditional costume and we visited Corbii de Piatra Monastery (Stone Ravens Monastery) and the blue house of mother Uta. It was exciting to visit this part of Corbi. First of all wearing the traditional costume brings you a feeling of peace and harmony with everything that surrounds you. Then, many of the costumes that we had were old, were costumes with which our grandparents got married, with which they or their children have lived important moments in their life – high school graduation, college graduation etc.

It was beautiful especially because we have built a moment of harmony, of communion of the present with the past. The villagers admired us in that fairytale context – young people dressed in traditional costumes at Corbii de Piatra Monastery.

The fairytale evening

We returned in the evening to the guesthouse to receive the guests. About 20 villagers joined us and celebrated with us Ia’s Day and Sanziene. All wearing their traditional costumes danced and sang in the spirit of the event. We were amazed by the mastery with which they played hore, sarbe and many other dances, some of which were specific to that area. They also impressed us with their talent for singing. A young music band played at old (from which we remember the flute and the panpipe) and new instruments a series of traditional songs.

We enjoyed the traditional dishes cooked in cast-iron kettle with wood fire: forcemeat rolls of cabbage cooked in tuci (cast-iron kettle), grilled trout, pork, desserts made after recipes from Arges. The morning almost caught us dancing and singing.

“This opportunity to wear once again the ia, to dance and sing, to eat and drink traditional drinks and dishes, brought a sincere happiness both on the blushing faces of the young people who were like teleported in a chapter from their grandparent’s life and the serene villagers faces wreathed by this returning in time” Diana Nicula, participant.

What’s next?

We want to return to Corbi to amplify this magic of the Romanian authentic and to take it into the urban areas.

“We, at Pure Romania believe in the idea of making moments capable to inspire. We hope that we manage that by Sanziene at Corbi event” Alexandru, organizer.

Spring – the rebirth of everything

Spring is my little secret, that mystic power that gives me wings

The sun is gathering its strength to melt down the last snow. The nature starts to come back to life. The first snowdrops take of feebly their heads from the damp ground. It smells like fresh air. Everywhere in the villages people start to prepare for spring. It is almost 1st of March, the first day of spring, the symbol of rebirth. Spring light invades people souls and makes them better to each other. The warmth revives everything from plants to animals. This is the evidence of that finally spring has triumphed over winter.

In the past people used to offer trinkets to children and young people. The trinket had to be offered before dawn. This is a very old spring tradition. Nowadays people still offer trinkets, mostly to women and young girls. The red and white twine, made out of wool, represents the contrasts: spring – winter, light – dark, hot – cold. The twine was worn until people were able to see the first signs of spring. After that they had to tie it to a tree in order to be lucky the whole year. Lately to the twine was added a silver coin which represents the sun. So the trinket became a symbol of fire and light, a symbol of the Sun. Nowadays the trinket symbolizes the rebirth, faith, optimism and happiness.

An old myth says that many years ago the Sun used to transform in a young man and walk on earth. One day a dragon kidnapped him and locked him in a dungeon. A young man fought to release the Sun during three seasons (summer, autumn and winter) until he finally defeated the dragon. Once with the return on the Sun on the sky the nature came back to life. The blood from the hero’s wounds dripped on the white snow. So in his memory the young men are supposed to intertwine a red and a white thread and to offer it to maidens. Red symbolizes the savior’s courage and love and white symbolizes the purity, the beginning of spring and the first spring flower – the snowdrop.

The celebration of the beginning of spring dates back from Dacians times. There are archeological evidences which prove the fact that 1st of March has been celebrated on these fairy tale lands for more that 8000 years. The Dacians used to wear around their neck trinkets made out of small stones painted in red and white. It seems that 1st of March was the beginning of the calendar year for the Dacians and that there were only two seasons – summer and winter. The trinket was some kind of an amulet meant to bring luck, health, happiness and love.

The Romans celebrate on 1st of March the god of nature forces, spring and agriculture, Mars. He is also the god of war. That is the reason for the red and white twine. For the Romans it represented the contrast between peace and war.

Spring energy overruns the whole nature. Birds start to nest. Animals do not hibernate any more.
Dragobete – How to celebrate love in Romanian style

Dragobete is the Romanian counterpart of St. Valentine. On 24th of February in Romania love and the beginning of spring are celebrated.

Dragobete is a Dacian celebration with pagan roots. Dragobete is a mythological deity like Eros or Cupid. It is said that he was the son of Baba Dochia, the main character in a myth related to spring arrival. This holiday is also known as “the day when the birds are betrothed”, because it is believed that this is the day when birds start building their nests. The day of 24th of February was believed to be the beginning of the farming year, the day when the bear leaves its lair, the beginning of spring.

Sanziene celebration or how people still believe in magical practices

Sanziene, the magical celebration, the beginning of summer

Sanziene is celebrated in Romania every year on 24th of June. Although it is associated with the Birth of Saint John the Baptist, Sanziene is a pagan celebration which origins in an old Dacian solar cult. In some places in Romania the celebration is also known as “the head of summer”. Sanziene represents the beginning of summer; it is celebrated only at three days after the summer solstice under the sign of the Sun. This date also represents the middle of the year. People used to believe that this is the day when the Sun loiters on the sky watching the maidens and the boys how they dance. That is why the day is longer than the night.

Some people say that the name of Sanziene comes from the Roman goddess of forests and hunting Santa Diana. Others associate the celebration name with the little white or yellow flowers with a sweet and very delicate scent named Sanziene.

Sanziene night is a magical night when the heaven opens and our world gets in contact with the mystical one. It is said that in the Sanziene’s Eve people can see the magical beings with the same name. In Romanian folklore Sanziene are imaginary, fantastic maidens who descend on Earth to dance and celebrate the summer. They are kind and beautiful and despite Rusalii or Iele, other mythical beings, Sanziene are auspicious, bring fertility to women, animals and birds, give to flowers scent and magical powers, heal people’s diseases and sorrows and protect the crops from bad weather. In the night before the celebration Sanziene can be seen dancing in forests and on fields. It is said that whoever sees them dancing will be mute or will go crazy.

In honor of this celebration people light big fires on hills and dance around them. In some villages people surround their houses, stables and fields with lit torches in order to cast away evil spirits. It is believed that the ones who surround the fire or passes through it will be protected during the whole year from diseases and will be wealthy and happy. After the midnight the fires are extinguished and people go to their houses in silence. This is the moment when the souls of the dead people and the magical beings are allowed to wander in this world. In the morning, on 24th of June the maidens used to bathe in dew collected from virgin places from Sanziene petals.

Sanziana flower (Gallium verum or Gallium mollugo – depending on the white or yellow color of the flower) is a plant that grows on fields, with small flowers, full of pollen, beautifully scented, which blooms around the summer solstice during the ripening of the grains. It has numerous uses in medicine and cosmetics. That is why the Romanian mythology gave it mystical properties. It is used in the magical practices performed on the night before Saint John the Baptist celebration. If a young girl places it under her pillow that night she would surely dream about her destined one. Sanziana flower is also an agricultural mark. Depending on the moment when it blooms the people know if the crops are ready to be harvested or not.

People make wreaths of Sanziene flowers which they throw on the house while they make a wish. It is said that if the wreath stays on the house the wish will come true, if it falls on the ground the wish will not fulfill.

In many areas in Romania Sanziene is still celebrated and people still believe that if they do not celebrate it properly then they will be punished by the magical beings.
