Where, when, who?

We have celebrated Ia’s Day and Sanziene a little bit earlier. Because we relied on people coming from Bucharest, we organized the event in the first weekend before 24th of June.

Curtea de Arges

We gathered 22 people from Bucharest. Among us three tots who didn’t wear for the first time the traditional costume. We began the story with a visit in Curtea de Arges, the first capital city of Wallachia. We visited the Royal Court, the Royal Church and Curtea de Arges Monastery.

Corbi, flowers, traditional meal

We continued our way to Corbi. A fierce rain accompanied us from Domnesti to the guesthouse. We have reached our destination with good weather. The summer rain quickly stopped and over the lake in front of the guesthouse rose the sun. We had a traditional rich lunch. The cheese, the ham, the eggplants, the beans paste, the spawn and the vegetables were served for starter. Then we ate tripe soup and pies cooked by recipes from Arges.

Enjoying the good weather we went to the meadows in the area to pick flowers. Tradition says that the flowers picked before Sanziene have magical powers. But they can be used for teas or cures only if they are picked before the 25th of June.

Ia, Corbi Monastery, Mother Uta’s house

Without exception we dressed the traditional costume and we visited Corbii de Piatra Monastery (Stone Ravens Monastery) and the blue house of mother Uta. It was exciting to visit this part of Corbi. First of all wearing the traditional costume brings you a feeling of peace and harmony with everything that surrounds you. Then, many of the costumes that we had were old, were costumes with which our grandparents got married, with which they or their children have lived important moments in their life – high school graduation, college graduation etc.

It was beautiful especially because we have built a moment of harmony, of communion of the present with the past. The villagers admired us in that fairytale context – young people dressed in traditional costumes at Corbii de Piatra Monastery.

The fairytale evening

We returned in the evening to the guesthouse to receive the guests. About 20 villagers joined us and celebrated with us Ia’s Day and Sanziene. All wearing their traditional costumes danced and sang in the spirit of the event. We were amazed by the mastery with which they played hore, sarbe and many other dances, some of which were specific to that area. They also impressed us with their talent for singing. A young music band played at old (from which we remember the flute and the panpipe) and new instruments a series of traditional songs.

We enjoyed the traditional dishes cooked in cast-iron kettle with wood fire: forcemeat rolls of cabbage cooked in tuci (cast-iron kettle), grilled trout, pork, desserts made after recipes from Arges. The morning almost caught us dancing and singing.

“This opportunity to wear once again the ia, to dance and sing, to eat and drink traditional drinks and dishes, brought a sincere happiness both on the blushing faces of the young people who were like teleported in a chapter from their grandparent’s life and the serene villagers faces wreathed by this returning in time” Diana Nicula, participant.

What’s next?

We want to return to Corbi to amplify this magic of the Romanian authentic and to take it into the urban areas.

“We, at Pure Romania believe in the idea of making moments capable to inspire. We hope that we manage that by Sanziene at Corbi event” Alexandru, organizer.

This mountain fascinated me. There is something special like from fairy tales. It is different when you look at it from above – an infinity of hills and hillocks cram under your sight covered with meadows, forest and from place to place with a village. To me it seemed the most fairy tale place ever and since then I’ve wanted to walk through this large garden (Rucar-Bran) by bike. Yes, bike adventures in Rucar Bran passage. This must be quite an adventure.

Bike adventures in Rucar Bran area

We started early at the beginning of June in a Saturday morning from Bucharest. We got in Magura village after more than 3 hours. It is a village bravely settled on the hillocks of Bran. It is a fairytale place bordered on two sides by two big groups of mountains: Bucegi and Piatra Craiului. It is a perfect place for bike adventures due to its specific relief and majestic landscape.

We started quickly. The eagerness to start our bike adventures was big. We descended from Magura to Zarnesti Steeps. The road is very beautiful. A wide path goes through people’s households. The place is of an authentic picturesque. The descending is quite long and has technical portions. The road ends with a steep descend through the forest. It was a brave debut in our bike adventure.

Then we climbed for about two hours to Curmatura chalet. Although very beautiful the road was difficult. We saw Zarnesti Steeps, a number of other rock formations, the thick forest which surrounds Piatra Craiului foothills and climbed some very steep slopes. It was worth the effort. At Curmatura chalet we met beautiful people, we saw a landscape like those you believe you can see only in the Alps and more than that we ate again the best pie in the world. Yes, in Romania, at Curmatura chalet you can eat urda (soft cow or sheep cheese) pie and yes is the best pie in the world.

We continued our bike adventure to the place named “La Table”. We cycled about an hour on a forestry road and then we entered on a very technical steep route with boulders and with paths which descended bravely through thick coniferous woods. There we were in the closest point to the steep ridges of Piatra Craiului Mountains. From the place named “La Table” we descended again on the forestry road to Dambovicioara Cave. We descended a lot. Like about 40 minutes.

The road took our bike adventure to Sirnea village on a steep climb. We got again into the area full of hillocks from where we could see both mountain groups – Piatra Craiului and Bucegi. We met in our bike adventure old and well preserved houses, simple people but full of mystery and happy in their souls and a clean and energy-giving nature.

Our bike adventure took us through Sirnea, Pestera and back to Magura villages. We cycled more than 8 hours and the whole trip took us more than 10 hours. We enjoyed every corner of the nature and the authentic.

The film made on this occasion is the most eloquent about the joy we have experienced. We prepare other escapes as daring!

Pure Romania – a fairytale realm and a place where you find your inner peace.

Phoenix Band – Romanian Music

Also known by the name Transsylvania-Phoenix, the Romanian rock band was created in 1962 at Timisoara. It is one of the most important Romanian bands of the 20th century.

Nicu Covaci, Mircea Baniciu, Ovidiu Lipan Tandarica, Nani Neumann and Josef Kappl started singing beat music, then evolved to psychedelic rock and then to hard rock. They have also experienced some progressive rock.

Phoenix is one of the first rock bands in Romania. It was inspired by the British band “The Shadows”. The initial name of the band was “Sfintii” (The Saints), but it had to be changed to Phoenix because of the communism’s aversion towards religion.

In the 1970’s due to political changes in Romania many bands disappeared, but Phoenix wasn’t one of them. Instead they changed their musical style into an unexpected one. That is how a new gender was born – the ethno-rock, inspired from authentic Romanian folklore. The first rock songs inspired from the Romanian folklore were: “Bun ii vinul ghirghiuliu” and “Padure, Padure”, both fiddler songs at their origins.

In 1972 Phoenix releases a disc named “Muguri de fluier” (Whistle buds), a title with a special metaphorical meaning. In the same year, the band members start writing the rock opera “Cantafabule” inspired by the mythological meaning of the animals in fables and legends. Phoenix recorded “Cantafabule” a year later. It was the most complex and evolved of their works. In 1972 takes place the huge concert from Sarmisegetuza Dacia. After this the band is forbidden by the political regime. As a reaction to the hard questioning to which he was submitted, Nicu Covaci gives up to Romanian citizenship and leaves to Netherlands.

In the night of 1st of June 1977 the truck with the band members hidden in the speakers and the audio system leaves illegal Romania. Covaci manages to smuggle his colleagues in Yugoslavia with Germany as final destination. Once arrived in Germany the Phoenix breaks up and each of its members starts a new project.

After 13 years of absence and after many attempts to revive Phoenix in Germany, Nicu Covaci returns to Romania and together with Mircea Baniciu helds a concert. After that, during 1990’s Phoenix albums are re-edited. The last one was “In umbra marelui urs”, a reference to the communist times in Romania and the former URSS influence.

On the 12th of December 2012 Phoenix celebrated fifty years of activity.

They wanted a different wedding, a wedding organized in a special place, a wedding that could give them the chance to show their status of global citizens. In their opinion globalization should cancel the borders amplifying the cultural identity, the local atmosphere and the authentic magic of places. We wanted to relive authentic Romanian stories and succeed to bring through them inspiration. Actually, we all wanted a story. This is the reason why we have met – the desire of living an authentic story. And the desire was so great that helped us to find each other even though there were a few thousand kilometers between us.

In May 2014 we started to discuss about the possibility of organizing a traditional authentic wedding as was made long time ago in Romania. We chose a traditional village with beautiful people and a lot of stories. Furthermore this village from Arges named Corbi has a wonder – a church carved in a rock, old since Dacian times, Corbii de Piatra Church. We chose the costumes, we thought about the space design, we set the dishes that were to be served, we chose the music and we tried not to miss any detail.

On 2nd of September we organized the wedding. It was an exciting event for all those involved. Traditions old for hundreds of years were brought back to life in Corbi village. The villagers wore traditional costumes after more than 20 years, old songs resounded again, folk dances of the place were brought back to life and a suite of beautiful people dressed in traditional clothes climbed the path to Corbii din Piatra Church. We all lived a story, one that brought us closer to the essence of the Romanian people, actually closer to the essence of human nature, closer to the authentic things and their purpose in our life.

You can see the whole story and a series of videos here: http://www.pure-romania.com/south-korean-couple-living-new-york-traditional-wedding-romania/

When you believe in stories you get to live them and it is wonderful. You smile, you vibrate strongly, understand the things around you, all becomes mysterious, authentic, time stops and social values change.

We, Pure Romania team had the chance to organize a traditional wedding in order to realize who we are, which is the legacy that we, Romanians have from the people who gathered it on these blessed places (I cannot stop thinking that these places are often called “The Gardens of Virgin Mary”) and how big is the peace when you anchor yourself in the authentic.

There is also a sad part about the stories. They are quickly forgotten and the return to the daily noise is too sudden. We try to keep building stories. We want so much to keep alive the emotion in order to pass it on.

In the end I would like to highlight the idea that in this world each one of us has the duty to give and that the long lasting happiness exists when we get to give to others, when we are not alone. The traditional wedding from Corbi showed us clearly this aspect. All those involved, the villagers, the grooms and their families, the organizers were totally present and gave from their hearts creating an authentic story.

Put heart and soul into everything you do and that will take you further and above!

Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday is the Christian celebration which precedes the Easter. This is the day when Christ entered Jerusalem. It is also called Flowers Sunday and is the beginning Easter Holidays.

For the Romanians this day is as holy as Easter itself. So the people respect it and still keep traditions old for hundreds of years.

It is already spring so the flowers are bloomed and the nature is all green and lively. It is said that if the weather is fine on Palm Spring so it will be on Easter. On this day people go to church with flowers and willow twigs to be blessed by the priest. Then they make wreaths out of the twigs and place them in front of an icon or near a window in order to be protected for the rest of the year. The willow twigs represent nature and vegetation rebirth and the symbol of chastity. They are a substitute for goddess Flora. In the Roman Empire the Flowers celebration was dedicated to goddess Flora. They were also used to welcome Jesus Christ in Jerusalem. Those who carry flowers names are celebrated since Roman days even if it was Lent.

Some willow twigs are given as food to cattle to be protected. The orchards and vineyards are adorned with blessed twigs so they can provide good fruits. The beehives are also adorned so the bees can enjoy the divine blessing.

The tradition mentions that on Palm Sunday Eve the girls made a complex ritual dedicated to the goddess of vegetation, Lazar or Lazarica. This ritual was like caroling and was practiced only by women. So one of them was dressed in a bride (the one named Lazarica) and together with other women went to carol to every house in the village.

For Palm Sunday women bake pies and give them to poor people in order to honor the memory of the deceased relatives. It is also the day when, if it is sunny, the clothes and the girls’ dowry (pillows, quilts and carpets) are taken outside in the fresh spring air.

This day is also called “the sting nettle wedding” because this is the period when the sting nettles bloom and are perfect to be gathered and cooked.

It is forbidden to wash your hair on this day unless the water was blessed. At midnight the girls used to boil basil and then they washed their hair with the infusion resulted to keep it healthy and strong. The rest of the water must be poured at the roots of a pear tree. It is said that shortly after this ritual is completed the girl will meet the one destined to be her. The tradition is that the ritual must be performed before dawn or else the girls’ hair will turn white.

It is a tradition to eat fish on Palm Sunday and to keep some of it for Easter Day. It is said that if one eats on Easter fish kept from Palm Sunday one will be fast like a fish for the whole year.

May you have a wonderful spring and a beautiful Palm Sunday! May the nature fulfill all your wishes and protect you from all evil things! May you have a lot of inspiration and good mood!

March is special because it brings the spring and makes the sun smile. This is the moment when the nature harmonizes its contrasts and gives them to the travelers who are ready to discover its depths.

The key is in the courage to begin the trip, to make way to the magic of the nature. This trip is made under the sign of the spring sun.
In the spring weekend 7th-8th of March we made a trip in the traditional area Sirnea-Pestera-Magura in order to discover spring’s contrasts and the beautiful villages of the Rucar-Bran depression where traditional life still exist and where people live differently. We got to Sirnea village by car. The practicable road stopped suddenly and a pure, untouched world away from civilization was lying in front of us. The high snow and the road twist made those lands to be reachable on foot. It was a beautiful morning. The sky of a gentle blue was cloudless. A smiling spring sun was watching us from far away. The coniferous forests were green and the villages were smoking on their chimneys although the winter was almost gone. With a lot of courage we walked through the high snow. The wind snows up in many areas and the leg sinks till knee. After 30 minutes of walking we got again on a clean road. There the snow was less deep and the walk was easier.

We were like children who wandered through a town full of wonders. From Piatra Craiului massif was flowing feebly a creek that crossed a cluster of pine trees. In its bed has formed a swamp, now frozen. You could see everywhere animal footsteps, but mostly around the creek. That place was magical like a fairy tale realm. An overwhelming feeling of inner peace filled your heart when you were looking around. All things were gentle and all of them wanted the best for you. It was like the nature was calling you to be part of the happiness that the spring brings.

<g clip-path="url(#a)"><mask id="b" style="mask-type:luminance" maskUnits="userSpaceOnUse" x="0" y="0" width="600" height="28"></mask><g filter="url(#c)" mask="url(#b)"></g></g><defs><clipPath id="a"></clipPath><filter id="c" x="5.438" y="-29.667" width="589.123" height="52.8" filterUnits="userSpaceOnUse" color-interpolation-filters="sRGB"><feFlood flood-opacity="0" result="BackgroundImageFix"/><feBlend in="SourceGraphic" in2="BackgroundImageFix" result="shape"/><feGaussianBlur stdDeviation="5.5" result="effect1_foregroundBlur_3983_183"/></filter></defs>

We continued our way on top of the hills where the houses were more. The houses in those areas are covered with shingle generously colored in vivid colors of red, green and yellow. They have big glass windows and look like colored mushrooms in the greatness of white. From here, from the top of the hills Bucegi Massif could be seen full of snow as it had been the whole year. The broken lines of the glacial cirques or of the steep slopes were gentler now because a lot of snow has settled in curved forms. It was fascinating. Those places seemed to be protected from both sides by the high mountains.

It is very hard now to recover the feelings that I have experienced then because a too big accumulation of factors took us on the happiness way and because the spring sun created the strong the sensation that it had appeared on those lands for us. It was a different world, a fairy tale world, an archaic world where everything was still pure, where nature was untouched and where people could get lost in the happiness that lasts forever.

I do not know if we are capable to fully thank the spring for what it brings ceaseless into our lives every year…

Spring – the rebirth of everything

Spring is my little secret, that mystic power that gives me wings

The sun is gathering its strength to melt down the last snow. The nature starts to come back to life. The first snowdrops take of feebly their heads from the damp ground. It smells like fresh air. Everywhere in the villages people start to prepare for spring. It is almost 1st of March, the first day of spring, the symbol of rebirth. Spring light invades people souls and makes them better to each other. The warmth revives everything from plants to animals. This is the evidence of that finally spring has triumphed over winter.

In the past people used to offer trinkets to children and young people. The trinket had to be offered before dawn. This is a very old spring tradition. Nowadays people still offer trinkets, mostly to women and young girls. The red and white twine, made out of wool, represents the contrasts: spring – winter, light – dark, hot – cold. The twine was worn until people were able to see the first signs of spring. After that they had to tie it to a tree in order to be lucky the whole year. Lately to the twine was added a silver coin which represents the sun. So the trinket became a symbol of fire and light, a symbol of the Sun. Nowadays the trinket symbolizes the rebirth, faith, optimism and happiness.

An old myth says that many years ago the Sun used to transform in a young man and walk on earth. One day a dragon kidnapped him and locked him in a dungeon. A young man fought to release the Sun during three seasons (summer, autumn and winter) until he finally defeated the dragon. Once with the return on the Sun on the sky the nature came back to life. The blood from the hero’s wounds dripped on the white snow. So in his memory the young men are supposed to intertwine a red and a white thread and to offer it to maidens. Red symbolizes the savior’s courage and love and white symbolizes the purity, the beginning of spring and the first spring flower – the snowdrop.

The celebration of the beginning of spring dates back from Dacians times. There are archeological evidences which prove the fact that 1st of March has been celebrated on these fairy tale lands for more that 8000 years. The Dacians used to wear around their neck trinkets made out of small stones painted in red and white. It seems that 1st of March was the beginning of the calendar year for the Dacians and that there were only two seasons – summer and winter. The trinket was some kind of an amulet meant to bring luck, health, happiness and love.

The Romans celebrate on 1st of March the god of nature forces, spring and agriculture, Mars. He is also the god of war. That is the reason for the red and white twine. For the Romans it represented the contrast between peace and war.

Spring energy overruns the whole nature. Birds start to nest. Animals do not hibernate any more. The first leaves start to grow and everything is dressed in a light green so beautiful and fresh. People start to clean the houses and their souls and embrace the first signs of spring. The gardens are prepared to be cultivated. The last remains of winter are eliminated.
